Lightning Triggered Tutorial

What is Lightning Trigger?

Lightning trigger is used in application for photographing lightning. With the CamBuddy Pro lightning sensor you can trigger the camera shutter with the sudden environment light change.

Example:

Note: All triggering functions need a shutter release cable to trigger the camera shutter or flash cable to trigger the external flash.

Lightning Photography tips:

Safety First!

Shooting lightning can be very dangerous, it is very important to find a good cover. Staying indoor is the best, avoid staying in an open area especially near tall trees, building or water.

Prepare Your Equipment

A good firm tripod is almost a must. Any potential shake will negatively impact the sharpness of the image. Wide angle and zoom lenses work the best, since it can fit more and at the same time have the flexibility to change the focal length and target a specific area.

Find a Good Lightning Storm

Find a good lightning storm is easy but a good spot to capture it is more challenging. Sometimes it is hard to find a good spot that is close but safe enough to capture the best lightning. Protect your camera against rain drops by putting a plastic bag/cloth to cover it against the rain drops.

Setup Your Camera

Set your camera and CamBuddy Pro on your tripod and configure the camera settings:

  • Set your lens to manual focus and then focus to infinity.
  • Set your camera ISO to the lowest value. Most DSLR cameras has 100 as the base value.
  • Set your camera to full manual mode and activate the lightning triggered mode in Joopic App. Control both the aperture and the shutter speed. Start a test with the shutter speed of 3-5 secs and f/8. If you are in a dark area, you might want to decrease the shutter speed all the way to 15-30 seconds, while in brighter areas, adjust to f/16 or more to allow longer exposures without overexposing the entire scene.

Compose Your Shot

While composing your shot, make sure to cover more sky than your foreground/background. Lightning is your subject, therefore the lightning will cover the majority of the picture and that’s exactly what we want.

Be Patient

Take as many shots as possible, pointing my lens at the same location. Just be patient and surely you can capture one of the best lightning.

How to start?

Laser triggered mode

  1. Camera Mode: Manual

  2. Shooting mode: Lightning Triggered

  3. Parameters Adjustment (ISO, Exposure, White Balance, etc)

  4. Set the shooting Options

  5. After all is set, press “Start” to start shooting

Note: When triggering, the Live View will be turned off automatically.

Option

  1. Adjust the triggering degree (Easy to trigger: Dimmer environmental light change can trigger the camera. --- Hard to trigger: Very bright environment light change will trigger the camera. )

  2. Choose the triggering scheme: by Shutter, Flash or Radio Signal

  3. Tap “Confirm” to close triggering scheme interface

Shutter: You will need shutter release cable to trigger your shutter camera.

Flash: You will need flash cable to trigger your external flash.

Radio Signal: You will need radio remote control to trigger by radio signal.

Real-life Shooting Example:

Example

Shooting Parameter:

  • Focal length: 24mm
  • Exposure: F5.6
  • Shutter: 1/100
  • ISO: 200
  • Accessories: CamBuddy Pro (lightning triggered mode)
  • Camera: Canon EOS 6D

Shooting Setup:

  • Find a good spot for lightning storm.
  • Protect your camera and equipment from the bad weather like rain and wind.
  • Use a 50mm or lower wide-angle lens, align it to the spot where the lightning might appear.
  • Place the camera to a very stable tripod to avoid movement.

Timing is the most important factor in capturing the beautiful moment. When the timing is off, “the moment” will be gone. Therefore every photographer need to master this timing skills to grab the best moments in that split seconds.

Normal Shooting method: Bulb mode or long exposure

Guidelines:

  1. Place the tripod firmly
  2. Set to bulb or long exposure mode
  3. Unless the lightning is not enough to illuminate the surrounding environment you want to shoot, set ISO to the lowest value
  4. Adjust the aperture according to the lightning distance Far: f/5.6, Moderate: f/8, Near: f/11
  5. Set the lens to Manual
  6. Estimate and predict the lightning strike spot

In this shooting method, you need to quickly press the shutter when the lightning appears until the lightning disappear. If you want to shoot multiple lightning, you can use the bulb mode to extend the exposure time.

The limitations of this method is that the photographer manually control the camera shutter. As there are delays in human brain to process and press the button, the shooting success rate in general is low and there is a high rate of exposure errors.

High-level shooting method: lightning triggered mode

Guidelines:

  1. Place the tripod firmly
  2. According to environment, set a normal exposure relative to the shutter speed
  7. Open the lightning triggered mode on the Joopic App

With this shooting method, when the lightning appears the camera shutter will be triggered automatically. After each trigger it can be adjusted according to real-time shooting exposure parameters to ensure that the next photo exposure is more perfect!

Advantages: the success rate is extremely high!

Frequently Ask Questions

Why is lightning triggered failed?

There are several reasons why the lightning triggered failed

  1. Shutter/flash cable is not attached or loose.
  2. Triggering Scheme is not set to shutter.
  3. CamBuddy Pro or camera battery is low.
  4. The surrounding lightning change is not fast enough; a slow change will result in trigger failure.
  5. There are lights facing the CamBuddy Pro front indicator, therefore sensor will receive false signals.
